Energy Smart® Gas Water Heater Operation

The Energy Smart® gas water heater control complements the FLAME LOCK® Safety System to provide increased water heating efficiency and safety. It provides more hot water faster, at a lower cost, and more safely than standard gas water heaters.

The electronic gas control valve incorporates a microprocessor-based programmable control, which is self powered and requires no external power source. This Energy Smart® gas control reduces annual operating costs by providing three user-selectable operating modes to match water-heating requirements to usage patterns.

• The Standard mode maintains water at the user-selected temperature.
• The Energy Smart® mode automatically adjusts water temperature based upon usage patterns to save energy and money.
• The Vacation mode maintains water at a reduced temperature to prevent freezing, damage and minimize gas use during periods of extended homeowner absence.

In addition, Energy Smart® gas models incorporate dual thermistor sensors, one near the top of the tank, and one near the bottom. This is unlike typical standard gas models which sense temperature only at the tank bottom. The Energy Smart® gas model’s two thermistor temperature sensors monitor water temperature more closely, resulting in improved water temperature control.

In addition, a diagnostic light monitors 8 critical water heater functions to ensure proper operation and the availability of hot water.
