40 Gallon Natural Gas Water Heater - N40S61-403
So far so good
It installed fairly easily and is working like it should. I suppose the truth will be told in a few years, when I see if it performs like the last water heater which had been in the house since 1994. Fingers crossed, here's to another 20 worry-free years and lots of hot water.

Good price, good service, good quality
The installation went smooth from Lowe's and the unit has operated well. It provides plenty of hot water to serve two bathrooms, tubs and showers for five people.

Four stars NO way
How this product ever got four stars...no way. I bought it in 2011, the valve lasted 2 years, replaced in 2013, lasted two years and it is out again. Extremely disappointed and has it every occurred to Lowes to carry these valves if they are going to have to be replaced every two years. Must be defective parts, yet nothing done and I am out $60 postage and $300 in labor for the same part replaced twice. Never again. Hope this helps someone else.

Easy replacement installation, with the exception of HW/CW fittings
Instructions were straight forward and installation was relatively easy. The only issue I had was with the attachment of both the HW and CW fittings to the 3/4" FPT connections. I purchased new "Sharkbite" style copper fittings, in this case, 3/4"MPT X 1/2" Cu. Problem that arose is that the FPT connections are recessed below the surface of the top of the heater. I started the fitting into the threads by hand, but the hex on the fitting (for tightening) ended up below the surface, and impossible to get a wrench or even extended socket onto it, as the hex size does not leave enough room around it for a socket. I ended up having to return the fittings, and purchase brass female nipples and Sharkbite fittings with FPT connections to have access to the fitting hex for tightening them.

First one I looked at and made purchase.
The only negative item I found was that the outside packaging did not note what type of water line fittings were supplied or were needed. I had to tare open the top of the packaging to inspect the outlet and inlet connections to see what was needed. Moving it is definitely a two person task. The self sparking pilot lighter is definitely an improvement over the old match light system.

My 12 year old 40 gallon gas contractor grade water heater started showing signs of aging in my 2001 Ryland home.
A friend in Richardson had a slight flooding problem when his 50 gallon water heater rusted out and leaked onto his first floor carpeting; he recommended that I check my water heater.
Therefore I flushed it out using a garden hose, but only noticed some fine white flakes coming out at other end.
When I noticed small leaking in water heater drain pan, I started looking for a replacement. I found a tankless water heater would be very difficult to install ... and since my water heater is in attic it made sense to replace with same 40 gallon water heater. I have three daughters who take marathon showers, therefore a 50 gallon water heater would be more costly per month for me.
I purchased this Whirlpool 40 gallon water heater (and some parts) from Lowes on sale. My brother install it with the help of a daughter, pullys and rope.
Taking down old water heater was harder because we couldn't get all the water out. Installing new water heater was easier because it was lighter. 2-3 hours later I had a new water heater installed plus saved $400-$500 installation costs. My total costs with parts were $400. I have never had a problem with Whirpool water heater in the past two years, not even a pilot relight. Highly satified!
I put old water heater in front of house to be hauled away with trash pickup, but it was gone before nightfall.

I purchased the same model water heater to replace the old one because it was reliable and lasted over the expected time.

Fine product but loud
The water heater is fine. When it is re-filling and heating it sounds like an airplane taking off. Quite loud. Otherwise no problems.
