40 Gallon Natural Gas Water Heater - N40T121-403
Hottest water so far!
Wow! What a difference in the amount of hot water! Out unit is set only at hot and it cranks out more hot water than our 16 year old heater ever did! I did not rate the quality yet is it was just installed, but it seems like a well built unit. Like the darker color gray vs the white color. My friend just bought a 50 gallon 6year Whirlpool hot water heater, but I decided to go for the 40 gallon but with a 12 year warranty for the piece of mind, especially with the new sensors up front. We'll see if it lasts that long!

Easy to install, great now, true value and quality determined many years from now
Very easy to install and is working great now. True test will be determined many years from now. With a 12 year warranty my expectation is that it will live up to its warranty. So far so good.

previous water heaters have had stems on top to attact in and out hoses. This one did not. It had two holes with nylon treads. That was the first of about four trips back to Lowes. according to the plumber, that I hired to innstall the water heater, Lowes sold me the wrong parts for these in and out conections with the nylon treads. He also said Lowes is the only place in town that he knows of to buy Whirlpool parts. (this is the same problem I discovered when I tried to have my old waterheater repaired. My old Whirlpools waterheater was a nine year and lived shortly longer. I liked the old one and that is why I purchased this twelve year heater.
that brings up another point. It cost me $463. to have it innstalled. I cant imagine buying one with shorter life at that high cost of installing.

Installed it myself
The new unit is nice to look at and was easy to install. The hardest part was getting the old water heater out sine we were only able to drain a little over half of the water. I replaced all water and gas lines and bought a water heater jacket as long I as was changing it out. Putting this new one in was much easier. I will need to cut an access panel in the door of the closet because the control unit sticks out further than my old one. This thing heated up quickly. Lighting the pilot was a snap. The instruction booklet stated that I was watching for a red light to blink when the pilot is lit. the light on the unit is white. was a little confused thinking it needed to change to red to be lit. The burner kicked on however and I learned my lesson quickly. Very happy with the purchase. (Well as happy as you can be when you have to replace a water heater!) /I expect to get a number of good years of use from it.

40 Gallon Heater for a family of 4
This water heater replaced a 10-yr old 50 gallon and seems to keep up fine with 2 adults and two young children. We do not use 2 showers at the same time, but I'm sure that would not be a problem as the recovery rate is the same or slightly better than 50 gallon units. The lint guard around the bottom is the only place for improvement. It was relatively cheep and did not fit properly when trying to install in a confined space. The 40 gallon tank width allowed for a tight installation and gave us room to install a water softener that would not have fit possibly with the old 50 gallon water heater. We're happy we replaced the 50 with a 40. It should save some money and keeps up with us fine.
