50 Gallon Natural Gas Water Heater - N50T61-403
Gas water heater that is very easy to install...
From the store to the job being completed it only took around 2 1/2 hours, and thats counting removing the old water heater. After filling the water heater with water I lite the pilot light and around an hour later we had HOT water. Thank you Whirlpool for making such a great product that is easy to install. ***** STARS

Fairly easy to install. However I do not like how deep the sockets are where the 3/4" NPT hot and cold water hookups are. The threads sit so far below the top cover of the heater, that you can't use a wrench to tighten the fittings into the heater. The lugs on the fitting are lower than the top cover. Can't use a socket wrench either as the pipe stub has already been soldered into the fitting. So then you have to torque on the pipe or very top of the fitting with a pipe wrench. This puts a strain on the soldered connection and/or could collapse the copper tubing. Need to torque pretty hard to assure no leaks in the threaded connection. I was worried about damaging the fitting/stub soldered connection vs not getting it tight enough. In the end, I had no damage and no leaks, but I thought it was dumb to design the female threaded connection so far below the top of the heater. Shouldn't have had this worry if they were raised above the cover.

Knock-out holes need to moved in packaging , for easier two man carrying. Water is hot , but doesn't stay warm long , bought larger tank , however hot water runs out quicker during shower. Temp is turned all the way up.

I am on my second one of these. The first one we got put up on the stand and began hooking up the waterlines and gas only to find that one of the two water hookups was bad. The threads where you install the cold water line were bad so we could not get a fitting to screw into that hole. We had to take it down, take it back to Lowes only to find out that Lowes will not automatically exchange it. We spent more than 20 minutes on the phone to get a Return Authorization Number. This is a 148 lb water heater, not a bad drill or something. Not only that but, the holes where you install the fittings are inset into the top of the heater which makes tigtening the fittings very difficult. If I had not had gift cards to Lowes, I would have bought a Rheem from Home Depot. I just hope this unit lasts as long as my old Rheem did (15 years). We'll see.

So far So good
After reading bad reviews on the big orange box brand, I decided to go with this model. We really didn't need the 50 gallons, but the 40 gal was only $50 cheaper so what the heck! The price was very reasonable. This model is replacing an at least 20-25 year old model. It's only been in a week.....so all I can say is that it fired right up and within an hour we had good hot water. The igniter worked fine. It is a little loud, but it's location does not affect us. I'm not sure on the energy cost as of yet. One thing to put on your list is 3/4" nipples for in/out water flow....they do not come with the product. Hoping to get another 20 years out of this one. We'll see!! PS: My local Lowes store was very helpful when purchasing.

Well made unit
Before purchasing this model, I did extensive research on all gas water heaters that could be purchased in my area. Many sounded like quality products until I spoke to owners of similar models. Whirlpool units have excellent ratings. Although customer reviews can be flawed and one cannot base a decision simply on ratings, it is hard to ignore the disparity between manufacturers. The internals of this model are nearly identical to the model with a 12 year warranty but the value is much better. Consider the $50 extended warranty from Lowes to bring the warranty more in line with the higher-end model (11yrs vs 12 yrs). After only a few weeks I am happy with the purchase.
